The Role of Government in a Free Society
In the liberal view that the justification for government action is to prevent coercion, this leads to a very short list of basic functions which governments should undertake. In these basic functions can be listed very simply. To prevent one man from coercing another, the internal police function. There are second providing for external defense. These two are really part of the same. And beyond this to promote voluntary cooperation among people by defining the terms under which we're going to cooperate together and by adjudicating disputes.
