By the time Anna was growing up in East London, the trade in animals had attained an industrial scale. The other aspect that it's really important to bring up is the fact that animals were treated so badly by humans in the 19th century. You were looking at starving malnourished, brutalised people. And the fact that they then didn't feed their animals properly and brutalised them in turn, they were simply passing on what they were suffering. Yes. I think it was a particular feature of the industrial revolution that people started to treat animals really as if they were machines.
