If you want to focus on something like teaching, find a position where that's your job description and also your path to promotion. Nowadays, at my institution in the non-tenure track, you can move up and be promoted to full professor as an educator or as someone who's doing scholarly work and teaching well but maybe isn't bringing in a lot of extramural funding.
