Is There a Gauge in Physics?

Gauge is a word chosen to hearken back to the age of the railroads. But really what it means is an arbitrary parameter of your theory. The whole stand of model physics is a gauge theory. It's almost like the theoryi only tells you changes, or how it changes from a starting point.
