Greeks were unable to find a viable, sustainable way of working together in their mutual self interest. The next big competitor on the scene came from other greeks living to the north of them - macedonia. Macedonia was a kingdom, and it had a very strong military tradition. When they conquered all this land, the language that they took with them was the greek language. And so you've just mentioned alexander the great, and later on, a lot of greek ideas and er culture was also infused into the roman empire.
