Is There a Link Between Spiritualism and Witchcraft?

How did witchcraft connect with spiritualism and occultism at the time? There's a really interesting set of questions, i think, here. The modern occultists really are interested in witchcraft for itself. And what does the church have to say about all this? It would be fair to say that the church had as little as it possibly could to say about it.
