Fungus can spread from contact between individuals. We have a fairly quiet pandemic going on at the moment of a new yeast infection. It's called Candidarorus and it's quietly colonizing the world has been since 1999. So this is a system that's been around for millennia. At that point, if it cordyceps, spirulates in the ant and the spores reign over the forest floor and infect new ants.
