i try and get in the head of the character am, which determines how his voice sounds. When i first got into voice overwork, to naturally just make whatever face i needed to make to make the sound happen,. Because i hadn't done that on stage too so at that's really oting. I always love watching behind the scenes reels of the professional animation, professionally animated feature like movies and cartoons. There's so much you see of some little kind of like facial twitch or a tick, or a way someone might curl the side of their mouth when they are speaking or singing. That then gets inherited into the way a the character is portrayed on t stage.
