There is this assumption that people in ancient Greece had sussed it all out. They were enlightened. People in the Middle Ages were ignorant. But that's not true, is it? I think there was definitely a period after the fall of the Western Roman Empire where a lot of people in Western Europe were cut off from the learning of ancient Greece. And that needed to be rediscovered.
