Danto is a philosopher who's trying to work out what art is. He says that in the past, there's been different theories. And then finally, his theory of art is that this art world theory,. which is that art is whatever the art world decides is art. So all that exists for Danto is a conversation about stuff that we call art. An artwork is always charged with a message or commentary. It would, I should think, never have occurred to the painters of Lascaux that they were producing art on those walls - not unless there were Neolithic estheticians.
