The Biomechanics of the LCL
The LCL is as a primary restraint to varus stress at 5 degrees and 30 degrees of knee flexion. The tensile strength of the LCL is 750 newtons of valcus force. An intact ligament will be a palpable cord-like structure. Common symptoms include instability near full knee extension, difficulty with cutting or pivoting activities, and lateral joint line pain and swelling.
