Individualism and the Spinner's Wheel
Gandhi used the spinning wheel to dramatize his belief that India needed to become self-sufficient in the creation of its own goods. He didn't think a kind of political independence from England would be sufficient if there wasn't also self-sufficiency on the level of the material. Gandhi was very invested in the small producer, not the industrial factory which ended up really being the way that in that part of the world textiles were to be produced.
