One of the very few polsters who has been consistently really good with her polling figures is ann seltzer from iowa in the us. She goes for this really simple approachf just asking people ther how likely they are to vote, and pretty much taking their answers that face value. But lots of other polisters find if they take that approach, it doesn't work merely well enough for them, and therefore build these more complex models. So there's a genuine debate at the heart of modern political poling as to which approach is best.
