The Importance of Short Terms in American Democracy

In ancient Greece, one-year terms were the norm. In modern American democracy, two year terms are a throwback to that ancient Greek ideal of short terms. A study found that in the two years when a senator is just coming up for reelection, he's 10 percentage points more likely to vote for a free trade deal. Hillary Clinton voted against every single free trade deal in her first four years as a senator. That is democracy right there.
