In Iran, the religious clergy and shear eslam is financed by a system of taxation called al hums. Al hums means the 20 % of whatever basicl lakian people in ern are worth. The shah wanted to break the monopoly of the land owning families who gave considerable patronage to the religious seminaries or institutions. He did that in 19 63 but was met with pushback from the religious institutions which led him to exile e romeni for 15 years. In 19 67 he was crowned as king of kings at a ceremony filmed on youtube.
