Livery companies in london would hold magnificent feasts. They'd hold parades across the city. You could, again, be fined if you didn't turn up to these parties. If you didn't dress up in your finest outfit and participate in a parade, again, it would be deemed a negative contribution to the community. Being a merchant was absolutely part of a merchant's everyday life.
