Macedonia was a warrior society. Alexander's obviously growing up against the background of the Macedonian court, and these were very martial people. In many ways, they still had this bronze age mentality. He was part of this vast circle of aristocracy that was highly competitive. People learned to ride horses, to get training in arms very, very early on.
