Did the Cultural Revolution Get Out of Hand?

The idea of overturning all society, in smashing the old cultures and putting something new in their place was very exciting to many young people in europe in the sixties. The beetle sir rather satirized this as a famous song called revolution. And thi's also fair to say that in parts of africa, for instance, where many of the countries were just decolonizing finally, the idea of a an unapologetic, highly non western style of govern seemed at least inspiring to some.
