What Is the Connection Between Air Quality and Disease?
Miasma theory became increasingly prominent in medical thinking from the very beginning of the fourteenth century. When the black death hit europe in the late 13 forties, miasma theory provided medical thinkers with a ready made explanation for what was going on. The gallenic model of understanding everything in terms of what's going on inside the body and individual preponderances for certain states of health didn't really fit with what was happening. So this idea about miasma was very, very helpful.
