Yerkes was trying to get the cable car franchises extended for a hundred years, or, as people said, a perpetual franchise. He found more opposition than he was used to from some of the corrupt politicians he had worked with previously. People were walking around the downtown area wearing on their lapels, little little hangman's noises. Yerkes later wrote in his memoir that he kind of respected jerkes for his brilliance and his is his will.
