An ant colony isis a completely co operative system. Every no ant is really out for itself, trying to get to the food source faster than another ant. They can even form bridges with their own bodies if there's a gap in the trail network. And i should say, this is what engineers would all a sort of socially optimal way - they're trying to make over all traffic flow the best as possible.
