What's the Difference Between Machine Learning and Data Mining?

CNN's John Sutter talks about his transition from ocean engineer to data scientist. He started out in the defense world, and then got into galaxy classification competitions with a mutual friend. Then he went on to do some machine learning projects that were really focused on target discrimination using low frequency sonar. The job is all around marine environment, so it can be very harsh on different things like materials and all that stuff.
