The Importance of Soft Tissue Coverage in Open Fractures
Obtaining soft tissue coverage is important prior to proceeding with bone grafting if needed. Bone grafting may occur after the wound is clean and closed. Complications of open fractures include surgical side infections, osteomyelitis, neurovascular injuries, and compartment syndrome. If there is no critical bony defect, then open reduction internal fixation or intermegillary treatment may be undertaken.
