The Crisis of Confidence in Athens
When Athens is defeated by Sparta in 404 BCE, a group known as the 30 Tyrants comes to power. They select 3,000 Athenians to share government over the city and murder their opponents. After a brutal eight months, the Tyrants themselves are forced out and democracy is restored. But this is a raw, divided city, whose citizens are still reeling. And when one man in particular avoids taking sides in the aftermath, he pays the price.
