It is fair to credit the victorians with popularizing christmas, but they did not invent it. The idea of a tree at christmas goes back a very long way in britain and germany. But queen victoria loved her tree - she was this kind of medior icon who knew how to use media. And so that picture of that tree and the idea of trees hit this desire to re invent christ Christmas. Within a decade, really, the 18 fifties, went from no tree to universal trees. You really can see where it comes from in that period more than any other.
