The 1961 Freedom Rides took interracial travelers from Washington to New Orleans. They encountered such intense resistance in Alabama, it had become a national crisis. The Kennedy administration was trying to kind of do something about what was happening to people. And they never got further than Mississippi, because once they got to Jackson, they were put in jail.
