A man named Philip Odell Clark wrote to a local sheriff with a story that peaked the interest of everyone who knew Beth's case. He told authorities he hit Beth with his car one day and then, afraid of being arrested, he buried her body. The Gills faced even more pain when Harry Gill died from a heart attack in 1970 at 53 years old. A woman contacted Martha and Jeannie's grandmother. She said she'd been in a general store about 45 minutes from Cape Girardeau on the exact day Beth went missing.
