The Relationship Between King John and the Pope Prior to Maggata
The Pope had initially been John's greatest enemy. King John refused to accept the Pope's Canada's Archbishop of Canterbury, Stephen Langton. The Pope imposed the interdict on England in the end and excommunicated King John. In 1213 he changes tack completely, accepts Stephen Langton,. He makes England a papal thief, later he takes the cross. By 1215 it was his greatest friend.
