The anterior tarsal tunnel is a flattened space defined by the inferior extensor retinaculum and the fascia overlying the talus and navicular. Contents include the deep pareneal nerve and branches, EHL, EDL, and dorsalis pedis artery. Patients may also exhibit numbness, specifically intermittent pyrosthesias and numbness in the plantar foot. The heel pain triad is believed to be due to loss of static and dynamic stabilizers of the medial arch and sub-contraction neuropathy on the tibial nerve.
