The Long-Term Backstory of the Marseille Riots

France is still picking up the pieces left behind by more than a week of rioting. In Marseille on France's south coast, tensions between police and young people have been particularly acute. Jenny Hill heard more of the longer-term backstories behind the most recent scenes of revolt. The riots exposed countrywide, the profound anger and frustration felt by those who endure poverty and discrimination in France. This year there have been 23 drug trafficking-related murders in Marseille.
