I don't know that he necessarily sees himself as this perfect night or someone without sin. I think it, as you said, like he's struggling to find something. So he holds on to what he knows to be good. He's definitely not like coky about it. And that's what i like as well. It's very messy with this character. Like the first big action that we see him take is killing this guy and he doesn't do it in self defense. But unlike that, when he kills the priest, he's not doing so in self defence.
