They used Twitter like it was a pharmaceutical drug, that if they tweaked it just right, they could reduce their mental health issues. That actually happened. There's nothing about that sentence that is hyperbole. And in the analogy sense, they used Twitter to cure their mental distress like you would use a pharmaceutical and had side effects.
