The Advantages of Using an Omnimice for Cardioid Miking

Using cardioid mikes, particularly for close miking, is that they pick up only quite a small area of the instrument they're pointed at. An omnimike can often produce more natural sounding results. Omnies can also out perform card s if you're making from a distance because once you get out of the range where the proximity effect boosts the cardioids low end, it'll typically feel a bit base light compared to an omni. The way the directional polar patern is created usually involves a certain amount of low frequency phase shift that can make what low frequencies the cardioid does capture feel less natural.
