There's a certain amount that you can back project from. Some of these regions, although they don't appear in contemporary sources, are probably fossilized from an earlier age. So things like diocese and boundaries, those bishop ricks were established possibly in the seventh century and unlikely to have changed in very substantial ways. There are a few scraps as well, like documents like the tribal hideage, which is probably a tribute. And it lists kingdoms and tribal groups alongside a figure that denotes the number of hides.
