Can Playing Computer Games Cause Harmful Consequences?
There's a widespread intuition, especially between gamers, that play must always remain morally irrelevant. This is the position of the ludic amoralist. He says, players only play games. No harmful consequences can be caused while playing games. But i do want to acknowledge that harmful consequences for the player are still possible when one plays too many hours. And in my book, i argue that, from an utilitarian viewpoint, theye are not. For the utilitarianism, play actions work just like ordinary actions. They are executed by le and can have consequences that are potentially morally relevant. Of course, it's unlikely that playing computer games causes a relevant amount of real harm. Quite the contrary.
