We get the scientific method, at least in some part, from this kind of process, not entirely with textiles. Every piece of cloth has enormous amount of knowledge embedded in it. It's sort of like I'd agree with the metaphor of light. And certainly how much of it is involved in even things that are very simple. That dying was much more important in some ways than alchemy. Alchemy is like all sexy because intellectuals didn't. But when you actually start to get the beginnings of scientific understanding in say the 17th century, the best job if you were into chemistry was to be the inspector of the die works in France.
