As part of a broader religious mind set, witchcraft could offer a convincing explanation for why things might go wrong in your life. From attributing misfortunes to witchcraft is a short step to hunting out and punishing those responsible for supernatural crimes. After all, as the book of exodus commanded, thou shalt not suffer a witch to live. And this early modern witch hunt exacted a deadly cost.
