The Reaction to the Royal Visits to the Front
The reaction back home is very much coloured bya, what one may call royalist propaganda in the newspapers. And he was developing this reputation for himself during the war as a king who who wanted to be a supporter of workers. In many homes in the period, a picture of the king and queen would actually hang in the house. So there is a real sense, i think, o a kind of 19 17 as being this moment of wobble and mixed reactions. The loodingoff offensive moment is actually really ke one when wWhen the king does go out in suchin remarkable circumstances and is present at tha moment of danger.
