George Elliot's Disappointment With Marriage
Elliot had a very complicated experience with marriage as an institution through her life. Could you tell us a bit about a defining relationship she had and how it may have shaped her views about marriage? Again, this is before she became George Elliot. She was in her mid-30s and she got together with a writer, a journalist, also a philosopher called George Henry Lewis who at the time was quite well known. He was married to a woman named Agnes and Agnes Lewis was having a fairly long-term affair with Lewis's close friend Thornton Hunt.
