The Importance of Sexual Selection

Darwin had a secondary mechanism which comes out of, out of natural selection, which is called sexual selection. So with natural selection, as it were, it's the fight to the death, you know, naked mud wrestling,. Whereas sexual selection is competition for mates. And that was, as you can imagine, that was very much appreciated by, by novelists like George Eliot and Thomas Hardy. But Darwin really realized that evolution is not progressive in that sort of sense. We may get what we want to call progress, but it's not guaranteed, and we don't find progress out there.
