Why Is Apalatcha Poor?

The poor and the economically marginal in the fifties and sixties were, in fact, the first people to be displaced by de industrialization. And so with the marginal elements of the kind of working class in a place like pittsburg, riht there, what's already happening is that employment growth in steel has stagnated or even begun to go into reverse. The number of coal mining jobs has fallen by over half from 19 50 to 19 60 because of the advent of surface mining. People who would have once been attached to or part of the security of the steel industry are now excluded from it. That process of protracted industrial decline also generates an elderly population.
