The History of Cornwall's Fishing Industry
Fishing has been part of Cornwall's heritage as far back as people have been there. There was a well-organized pilchard fishery on quite a large scale certainly going on in the 16th century and probably well before that. As an industrialised fishery it was done close to shore with open-rowing boats. And this is a really distinctive unusual and distinctly Cornish communal way of fishing. It could take them three days to empty a net once they got a shoal captured.
