Ethelred's Unreadiness
Ethelred's reign was marked by a series of attacks from the vikings. The king paid them off with tribute, but also recruited scandinavians into his own armies. Ethelred believed that any success in battle would only ever be fleeting. A long term victory without piety is inconceivable to him.
