In graduate school in d c, i moved down first to mississippi. I wanted to compare common law in a common law jurisdiction with the civil law jurisdiction. The records were some of the oldest that the parish had. They were dated back to the 17 seventies. And it involved criminal prosecutions gainst enslaved people but also estate records and succession records of free families of color from the region. We brought a bunch of leaf bags, trash bags, and we gathered them up,. put them in those bags, and i brought em back to the court house.
