Kurt enjoyed living with his father at first. But shortly before Kurt's 11th birthday, Don broke the news that he was planning to remarry. On June 14, 1979, when Kurt was 12 years old, Don filed a court petition to gain full custody of him. He continued to shuttle back and forth between relatives for the rest of his adolescence.
