William Clito's Legacy in Normandy
I was fascinated by how because Henry I was very effective at settling England, how much time he then had to spend in Normandy. There wasn't really anyone in what we call France who was happy to see Normandy ruled by the King of England. The King that had such huge wealth and Normandy had this very gritty reputation for fighting. It was something that the French King wanted to stamp out at any cost. So it's constantly unruly there and difficult to keep a lid on. Essentially, we think of Normandy as a settled land, but it wasn't. It was full of Vikings, you know, it was a Viking state. But at the end of the day, they were fighters.
