Rituals such as the opening of the mouth were performed on mummies. The mummy is embalmed and its wrappd, so that it wouldn't have been possible to actually get out the mouth and open it. By the time of teuton carmon, this medical side of the process was extremely well developed. Egyptians are one of the great icons of that civilization.
