For a long time, that really was not an issue. There just wasn't an easy way to do the average person had no way to copy a recording. As tec companies developed ways for consumers to copy media on to a format, we would see a resistance to that in the industry. lobbying activities that were aimed at extending copyright law to protect copyright holders and try and strike down technology before it could hit the public.
