A lot of people think that it's really a cultural thing. But I think to some degree, gut-level decision-making was the rational choice 50 years ago because experimentation was expensive. Experimentation now is just so much cheaper. So use your gut feeling to guide you, but then test it. See which one is more effective. Make the mug, make it a dollar, $5 or $10 and the mug. In many cases, like you said, maybe the mug that costs only $2 will be more effective than the $5. Then it's good. In some cases it won't be. Just test it.
