Roman Women and Their Value to Society

In the nineteenth century, women had legal independence from their husbands. A woman could raise an army if she had the money to hire private soldiers. For a first marriage, a roman woman of high status was expected to be a virgin. The obsession with sexual purity was part of the social class issue in Rome.
